The Southern University Ravine Project brought multiple engineering and survey firms together to stabilize the ground surrounding a ravine located in the western part of Southern University. Over the years, large rain events have caused significate erosion issues in and around the ravine and have jeopardized the foundations of the surrounding buildings. Before the engineers could develop a solution to the erosion and foundation issues, Fenstermaker first had to collect data in a highly wooded and dangerous area of the ravine while complying with all environmental regulations and requirements.  Fenstermaker surveyed the area with a combination of Drone LiDAR and conventional survey crews.

Because of the location and time constraints of the project, Fenstermaker had to develop a survey plan that would provide the best data set possible while prioritizing the safety of the field crews and the compressed timeline of the project. To do this, Fenstermaker used a multitude of survey methods ranging from traditional surveys utilizing total stations, levels, and GPS units to more advanced technology such as drone-based LiDAR. This was necessary to collect the level of detail needed for use in engineering design and analysis. The project area comprised of many hazard areas consisting of steep drops to poisonous snakes. The drone-based LiDAR solution allowed Fenstermaker to collect a significant amount of data in a short amount of time while keeping our field personnel out of harm’s way.

The Fenstermaker office personnel processed and developed deliverables based on the LiDAR data point cloud.  The team went above and beyond the clients expectations, delivering data that will make the Design Team’s job much easier.
