In 2010, Fenstermaker joined a monumental project to protect coastal Louisiana as a sub-consultant to the Shaw Group. The overall project is crucial to rebuilding and reinforcing Louisiana’s gulf coast region, in addition to establishing long-term solutions for the future safety of our state’s citizens. The project started in 2008 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hurricane Protection Office awarded the Shaw Group a contract to carry out the largest design-build civil works project the Corps has ever undertaken. The objective was to implement a hurricane protection system throughout coastal Louisiana by designing and constructing the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Hurricane Protection at Lake Borgne. The area rests tangentially to the junction between the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, making it a vulnerable and critical segment of Louisiana that needs particular attention and defense. The concept designs include constructing operable flood gates across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Bayou Bienville and creating a potential barrier wall that will link these flood gates, seal off the Mississippi River Gulf outlet, and merge into the existing levee system. Fenstermaker received a contract for our Advanced Technologies Team to provide dimensional control support and as-built laser mapping of the floodgates, Sector Gates, Barge Gates, and large foundations. Fenstermaker dispatched crews in New Orleans along the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, at Shaw’s fabrication yard in Delcambre, LA, and at a construction facility in Sulphur, LA. We also maintained project control for the construction portion.
