Anyone with a family can speak to the difficulties of earning a degree or certification while balancing a full-time job and busy home life. This past November, then Survey Technician, Bryant Labbie, did just that by earning his Professional Land Surveyor designation. We are very proud to celebrate Bryant’s achievement.
Bryant joined C. H. Fenstermaker & Associates in 2019 as a Survey Technician with experience in drafting and surveying. In 2020, eager to continue his education, Bryant began his pursuit of PLS licensure—no small feat with two of his three children under the age of two.
Balancing work, family, and education proved challenging. Ultimately, Bryant chose an online program with the University of Wyoming. This institution came recommended by several colleagues and was very accommodating of students with full-time jobs. He persevered through night classes, undertaking his studies in and around work and family. Bryant, making a point to acknowledge his wife as instrumental to his success, notes, “I attribute this accomplishment to my wife, who supported our family throughout the entire process.”
Also contributing to Bryant’s achievement were his colleagues at Fenstermaker. He recognizes several coworkers who assisted with timely advice and mentorship, ensuring that he develop a broad portfolio of experience in the field. Bryant points in particular to his manager, Bradford Millett, PLS, EI, for her guidance, as she strategically positioned him with the hands-on skills he would need to perform with excellence. Bradford has this to say about Bryant:
“Bryant has worked hard to accomplish his aspiration of becoming a professional land surveyor. His contributions to the company are invaluable, and he consistently seeks ways to improve efficiency by embracing new technology. We’re fortunate to have Bryant on our team, and I look forward to witnessing his continued success in his career. Congratulations Bryant!” —Bradford Millett, PLS, EI
Now that he has earned his Professional Land Surveyor license—a rigorous process lasting about 4 years—Bryant is excited to devote a little more time to family, now coaching soccer and T-ball for his children’s teams. He shares the following advice for those choosing to go after their own PLS certification:
“Reach out early on to potential mentors who have already earned their PLS. They have a lot of information to share with you that you won’t find in a textbook or anywhere else. Their advice will be extremely valuable.”
Congratulations, Bryant. We’re proud of your achievement, and we’re excited to watch your continued growth.
