Fenstermaker Engineering Intern Algy Semien, E.I. has been elected to serve as President-Elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Acadiana Branch for the 2019-2020 term. The new Board of Officers also includes President Jacob Neu, E.I., Secretary Grant Besse, E.I., and Treasurer Carolyn Chapman, E.I. The newly-elected leadership team will begin their term of service on September 1.
The Acadiana Branch of ASCE was established in 1982 to serve Louisiana Section members in central and southwest Louisiana. The group promotes ASCE’s mission by serving as a liaison between civil engineering university students and the professional community.
Mr. Semien is a valued member of Fenstermaker’s Engineering team and has been with the firm since 2015. Mr. Semien earned the designation of Engineer Intern in 2016. His project experience includes utility coordination and design, drainage design, detention pond design, roadway design, and municipal lift station and wastewater treatment design.
When asked what led to his increased involvement in ASCE Acadiana Branch, Semien responded. “I took the time to ask the engineering directors here at Fenstermaker what I could do to advance my career. I soon came to realize that young aspiring engineers have plenty of opportunities for career development including the pursuit of advanced degrees and professional certifications. An often-overlooked opportunity is to serve on the board of a professional organization. My mentor, Luke Hebert, P.E., encouraged me to serve on the ASCE Acadiana Branch Board to gain invaluable skills such as public speaking, leadership, organization, and networking. Bringing value to the local engineering community by serving on the board has been a pleasure and has allowed me to greatly expand my network. I look forward to being active within the organization for years to come.”
Engineering Director Luke Hebert, P.E. commented, “Algy has been an outstanding employee since he began working with us during a summer internship. I can remember one of his first tasks to work on the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall vertical profiles for a design-build project. Algy was so meticulous. Not only did he go through each vertical profile to confirm that it matched the roadway model, but he checked each and every profile by hand! Since his graduation from UL, he has been an exemplary full-time employee, working on an array of projects from wastewater treatment to transportation. It is a joy to work alongside Algy as he progresses in his Engineering career. Algy’s ambition and talent are a source of daily inspiration for our entire Team here at Fenstermaker.”
