Daniel Dehon, M.S., P.E., Fenstermaker’s New Coastal Engineer

Fenstermaker has welcomed a new Coastal Engineer, Daniel Dehon, M.S., P.E., to their Environmental team. Mr. Dehon is a graduate of LSU, having earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He has nearly 10 years of experience in coastal design, specializing in marine ecological engineering and aquatic biological solutions for sustainable shoreline protection in the Louisiana Coastal Zone and beyond.

Some former projects he has worked on include:

•  Alexis Bay Terraces: Located in Plaquemine Parish, Louisiana, this project was completed in October 2016. It encompassed 116 acres of shallow open water near Baptiste Collette across the Mississippi River from Venice, LA. The purpose was to create habitat, reduce wave energy, and induced sediment retention. Mr. Dehon was the engineer of record on this project and was responsible for all plans, specifications, & bid phase services on this FEMA funded project. Cost $2.2 million.
• Bayou Sara HMGP Bank Stabilization: Located in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana near the Mississippi River. The goal of the project was to protect the rapidly eroding cut bank along Bayou Sara, a tributary of the MS River. The final design included a rock and block mat revetment along two bends of the bayou to protect existing infrastructure, City’s sewer treatment bonds and a state road that provided the City’s only access to the river. Mr. Dehon was responsible for general grant management, preparation of a Design Study, preliminary and final design with plans & specifications (in accordance with the requirements of GOHSEP’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program), cost estimates, and bid package for public advertising.
• Rainey Wildlife Refuge OysterBreak™ Project: Mr. Dehon served a supporting role to Wayfarer Environmental Technologies (WET) on an OysterBreak™ project to protect the shoreline of the Rainey Wildlife Refuge in Vermilion Parish, LA. To date, approximately 3,000 linear feet of OysterBreak™ has been constructed. Mr. Dehon supported WET by providing surveying, stakeout, cross-section design, and contractor coordination services.

Mr. Dehon’s new position will award him the opportunity to engage in some of the most important issues that face our coast today. Some of these include habitat loss, sea-level rise, subsidence, saltwater intrusion, disaster response and recovery, oil spill response and recovery, and flood protection.
